One question that I am often asked is “why should we pay maintenance?” While it is included with any software license purchase, many clients & prospects are not sure of the benefits of paying maintenance, or are not aware of the risks associated with not renewing each year.

From a Dynamics NAV point of view there are a few key benefits included with maintenance which are worth outlining.

Access to new releases & hotfixes

Microsoft invests considerable research & development investment into the Dynamics products in general, and Dynamics NAV in particular. There is a new minor release every 9-12 months and a new major release every 2-3 years. By paying maintenance you have access to these releases, which may contain functionality that is useful to your business.

Ability to buy new licenses

As your business changes or grows, you may need to use new functionality that wasn’t previously in use. This may be adding an integrated EDI solution to receive orders from Coles, switching on electronic payment functionality or adding a few new users. All of these things will require updating your license, which can only be done if your maintenance is current.

Access to Microsoft Customer Source

Microsoft offers all Dynamics customers on maintenance, access to their Customer Source portal. This contains online training, manuals & support forums to help you get the most out of your investment.

Overall, we think the benefits far outweigh the risks. For 16% of your license value each year, you get the peace of mind that whichever direction your business goes, you will be able to use Dynamics NAV to support it.
