Four years ago I wrote a blog discussing the Microsoft Dynamics NAV support cycle. This blog explains the various points through which a Microsoft product passes, and the support options available to licensees of the software.
I thought it would be worthwhile to revisit the current supported versions of Dynamics NAV, and add some other critical Microsoft products.
I have listed commonly used Microsoft products, including their key support dates below. If your current Microsoft software is not on this list, then it has passed its Extended Support End Date and has limited (or no) support from Microsoft. You should seriously consider an upgrade when your version approaches its Mainstream Support End Date. (Note that I only selected commonly used products. You can check other Microsoft products by going here.)
Upgrading usually comes with significant benefits. For example, Dynamics NAV 2017 is significantly faster when running with SQL Server 2016. There are also system dependencies to consider. For example, several years ago a number of clients upgrading NAV found that they also had to upgrade from Windows XP.
It is a daunting, and potentially expensive, prospect keeping your software up-to-date. Migrating to cloud-based products (e.g. Office 365, Microsoft Azure) may be a cost-effective option as this bundles future versions into an ongoing monthly charge.
