Many companies in the Waste Management Industry that deal with the disposal of waste need to use a weighbridge to capture data, which for some companies can be used to drive their entire business. Over the years, Fenwick has integrated Microsoft Dynamics NAV with a number of different weighbridge heads for various clients, enabling these businesses to run solely out of NAV.
So, what’s the definition of a weighbridge?
“A large set of scales, usually mounted permanently on a concrete foundation, that is used to weigh entire rail or road vehicles and their contents”. Seems pretty simple, right?
For businesses in the Waste Management Industry, if a weighbridge isn’t functioning as expected it can cost the business tens of thousands of dollars every minute.
Everyone has used scales of one sort or another, whether it be at home trying to work out the correct quantities to put in your favorite recipe, at the supermarket to work out how much you’re actually buying, or in the bathroom hoping for good news. So you’re probably thinking, how can they not work? Isn’t it a simple matter of recording a weight and then reading that weight?

Up until a few months ago I would’ve told you the same thing. However, it’s all well and good to read the weight when it suits you on scales at home, but that’s not possible in the waste industry. Seeing is believing. I was recently out on a landfill site and I can tell you that they don’t have time to mess around with a weighbridge that doesn’t work due to middleware not functioning correctly. Having a software solution that can integrate with a weighbridge head to record the weights in real time, while also allowing a large volume of transactional data, saves time and makes more money.
It’s as simple as that.
Going back to my time on the landfill site, it was clear how enthusiastic the users were to transition from their old system to NAV with enwis), continually saying, “it’s coming along awesome,” throughout the Go-Live period. There were constant improvements to the user experience, and because all aspects of the business were running out of NAV, they could have a fully processed weighbridge ticket, which was generated from a pre-created order, and therefore contained all of the required details, such as: the customer; the equipment being used; the vehicle which transported it; and the weights, all with as little as five clicks. Details like this saved the operators from having to ask every driver what the ID of a bin was. If you assume this saved one minute out of every ten, then add that up over a twelve-hour day and you have an additional 1.2 hours where you can be receiving material and therefore charging additional customers, which results in a greater profit for the business.
Weighbridge integration with our NAV/enwis waste management solution has provided our customers with significant business benefits and competitive advantage.
